The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a floating accumulation of ocean plastic covering roughly 1.6 million square kilometres between Hawaii and California, an area about twice the size of Texas, or three times the size of France. It isn't a solid mass of floating rubbish you could walk on. Concentration is highest at the centre and thins out sharply toward the edges, which is why the "trash island" image is misleading.

How Big Is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?

The patch holds an estimated 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic. That's a mid-range figure; research puts the real range anywhere from 1.1 to 3.6 trillion pieces. By weight, that's approximately 100,000 tonnes, equivalent to more than 740 Boeing 777 aircraft, and 4 to 16 times higher than earlier estimates. The patch's location isn't fixed either: it sits roughly at 32°N, 145°W, halfway between Hawaii and California, and shifts with the seasons as ocean currents and winds change.

Most of what's retrieved from the patch is rigid plastic: hard polyethylene and polypropylene, plus derelict fishing gear like nets and ropes. Ninety-two per cent of the total mass is made up of pieces larger than half a centimetre, but by individual piece count, 94% of everything floating there is microplastic. Most of the patch, by number, is fragments too small to see from a boat.

The debris isn't spread evenly through that 1.6 million square kilometres. A concentration model built from multiple reconnaissance missions shows density falling away sharply from the centre outward, from the hundreds of kilograms per square kilometre at the core down to 10 kilograms per square kilometre at the outer edges. Scientists sort what they collect into four size classes: microplastics (0.05 to 0.5cm), mesoplastics (0.5 to 5cm), macroplastics (5 to 50cm) and megaplastics, anything larger.

Where Does the Plastic in the Patch Come From?

Globally, an estimated 1.15 to 2.41 million tonnes of plastic enter the ocean every year from rivers, and rivers remain the main global source of ocean plastic overall. That's not the same as what's actually accumulating inside the Great Pacific Garbage Patch itself: a 2022 study found that 75 to 86% of the plastic debris specifically inside the GPGP instead comes from fishing activity at sea, mostly gear traced to fishing fleets from Japan, China, the Korean peninsula and the USA. Fishing nets, also known as "ghost nets" once abandoned, make up 46% of the patch's total mass.

How Long Does the Plastic Stick Around?

The Ocean Cleanup has been measuring plastic in the patch since the 1970s, and the trend only moves one way: microplastic mass concentration is increasing exponentially, because more plastic keeps entering the gyre than leaving it. Individual objects recovered from the patch show how long it lasts. Researchers have dated a plastic crate found in the GPGP to 1977, a hard hat to 1989 and the cover of a Nintendo Game Boy to 1995, all still intact decades after they were made. Sun exposure, waves, marine life and temperature changes eventually break the plastic down into microplastics, but that process can take decades, and until then the debris persists in the gyre.

What It Means for Marine Life

At the surface of the patch, there's an estimated 180 times more plastic than marine life. More broadly, around 900 marine species are known to have encountered marine debris, and 92% of those encounters involve plastic; 17% of the affected species are on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Some sea turtles caught in fisheries around the patch have been found with up to 74% of their diet (by dry weight) made up of ocean plastic. Laysan albatross chicks from Kure Atoll and Oahu Island carry an even heavier load, with plastic from the patch's surface waters making up around 45% of their wet body mass.

That plastic isn't inert once it's eaten. An estimated 84% of it carries at least one persistent, bio-accumulative toxic chemical, so animals that mistake it for food are also taking on whatever's attached to it. Those chemicals then move up the food chain through bioaccumulation, from the animal that eats the plastic to the predator that eats that animal, and potentially on to humans who eat seafood from affected populations.

The economic cost is real too. Marine ecosystems are estimated to provide up to $50 trillion a year in value through the services they provide; plastic pollution is estimated to cut that value by $500 billion to $2.5 trillion a year.

Are Cleanup Efforts Actually Working?

The Ocean Cleanup, the organisation behind most of the primary research on the patch, has been running active removal operations there using a system called System 03. A peer-reviewed Net Environment Benefit Assessment, combining the organisation's own researchers with independent scientists, concluded that removing plastic from the GPGP delivers more benefit than harm, even after accounting for the environmental costs of running the cleanup, including greenhouse gas emissions from the vessels involved. Part of the case rests on the ocean's carbon cycle: microplastics interfere with it, and the assessment found the patch's build-up could be cutting carbon export by as much as 13 million metric tonnes a year, more than the cleanup vessels themselves emit.

What NSW Is Actually Doing About Ocean Plastic

None of this is happening in Sydney's backyard specifically. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch sits in the open ocean between Hawaii and California, thousands of kilometres from the NSW coast. But plastic pollution in local waterways is a real, separately measured problem, and NSW has been acting on it.

Around 90% of visible marine debris found in NSW waters is plastic, most commonly plastic bags, food and drink packaging, straws, cigarette butts and fishing equipment. Plastic packaging and single-use plastic items make up 60% of all litter across the state, and single-use plastic specifically accounts for 74% of litter found in NSW waterways.

Only 15.6% of plastic in NSW actually gets recycled. The now-banned items are littered at around 20 times the rate of other plastics, and roughly 40% of that littered plastic ends up in marine environments and waterways. The state has backed its wider waste strategy with a $356 million investment over five years from July 2022, and the plastics ban has already beaten its original goal, cutting plastic litter items by 45% against the baseline, ahead of the original 30%-by-2025 target, with a new goal of a 60% cut in all litter items by 2030.

Lightweight plastic shopping bags have been banned in NSW since 1 June 2022. The ban also covers single-use plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery, plates, bowls (without lids) and cotton buds. The NSW EPA projects the bans will prevent close to 2.7 billion plastic items from entering the state's coastal, marine and bushland environments over the next 20 years, and litter density from the now-banned items has already dropped from 15% of all litter in 2018-19 to 5% in 2024-25. NSW also runs Return and Earn, the container deposit scheme that pays a 10 cent refund on eligible drink bottles and cans returned to one of the state's collection points. Since launching in December 2017, it's grown into one of the state's biggest litter-reduction programs, with more than 40 million containers returned every week.

What You Can Do

None of us can clean up the Pacific Ocean from a share house in Newtown. NSW's own marine plastic problem is real, but it's measured and managed separately, and mostly ends up along the NSW coast and in local waterways rather than the mid-Pacific.
