Concrete removal versus a skip bin
A skip is the usual first thought for a slab breakup. It is worth knowing what it actually involves:
- Weight limits apply. Heavy waste bins are rated by weight, not just volume, and concrete reaches the limit long before the bin looks full.
- You do the loading. Every piece has to be lifted in by hand, over the side of the bin.
- It needs somewhere to sit. Driveway space, or a council permit if it goes on the street.
- It stays for the hire period. You are working around it until collection day.

Where your concrete and brick actually go
Concrete and brick are not landfill material by default. In NSW they sit under a standing Environment Protection Authority resource recovery exemption, which treats them as a recoverable resource rather than waste.
Once crushed and processed, concrete, brick, ceramics, natural rock and asphalt become what the EPA calls recovered aggregate: "a material comprising of concrete, brick, ceramics, natural rock and asphalt processed into an engineered material". Under that exemption recovered aggregate can be applied to land "in road making activities, building, landscaping and construction works".
In practice that means a driveway broken up this month can end up as road base. Two things change whether that happens:
- Keep it clean. Concrete and brick separated from timber, plasterboard, soil and general rubbish is far more likely to be recovered. Mixed loads are harder to process.
- Tell us what is in it. Reinforcing mesh and steel bar are fine and normal. Painted or coated surfaces, and anything you suspect contains asbestos, are not; tell us before we arrive.

What affects the cost of removing concrete and brick
We quote per job rather than publishing a price, because heavy waste varies more than almost anything else we collect. What moves a quote:
- Weight, not just volume. Concrete is dense, so a small pile can be a full load.
- Whether it is broken up. Slabs still in one piece take longer than rubble.
- Access. How far the crew has to carry each piece to reach the truck.
- What else is mixed in. Clean concrete and brick is a simpler job than a mixed demolition pile.
- Steel content. Mesh and reinforcing bar are fine, they just change how it is handled.
