Glass is the one material where a mistake gets expensive quickly. Broken window glass cuts through a bin bag, mirrors and shower screens are heavier than they look, and a cracked tabletop is genuinely dangerous to move alone.

We collect it from wherever it is, wrap and load it ourselves, and clear the area afterwards so there is nothing left behind in the grass or on the driveway.

Why glass usually cannot go in your recycling bin

This is the part that catches most people out, and it is worth knowing before you put a broken window out with the bottles.

Kerbside recycling is built for container glass: bottles and jars. Window glass, mirrors, drinking glasses, Pyrex and ceramics are made to a different composition and melt at a different temperature. Put them in the yellow bin and they do not become new glass; they contaminate the batch, and the load can be downgraded or rejected.

That is why a broken window is not a recycling-bin job even though it is obviously glass. It needs to go somewhere set up to take it.

How we handle broken glass safely

Our crew brings gloves, protective gear and rigid containment, so broken glass is contained rather than swept into a bag that splits on the way to the truck.

Two things that help before we arrive, though neither is required:

• Leave it where it is. Do not try to bag or stack broken glass. Moving it twice is where people get cut.
• Tell us if it is broken when you book. It changes what the crew brings, not the price.

If a pane is still in a frame, in a window, or fixed to a wall, say so when you call. Removing fixed glazing is different from collecting glass that is already out.

What affects the cost

We quote per job rather than publishing a price. What moves it:

• Volume. A single mirror is a different job to a full window replacement's worth of panes.
• Broken or intact. Broken glass takes longer to contain and load safely.
• Access. Ground floor with a clear run is quicker than a second-storey walk-down.
