What actually happens to an old mattress
A mattress is one of the hardest household items to dispose of, because it is several materials bonded together: steel springs, polyurethane foam, timber, and fabric.
Australia has a stewardship body for exactly this problem. The Australian Bedding Stewardship Council is a not-for-profit working to keep mattresses out of landfill and build a recycling network across the country. Their approved recyclers servicing New South Wales include BINGO Industries, Soft Landing, Sydney Recycling Park, KTS Recycling, CDS Recycling and Liverpool City Council.
Worth knowing before you assume a mattress simply gets recycled: the ABSC states plainly that "a mattress cannot be 100% recycled in Australia", and that the materials recovered from mattresses currently have limited resale value. Dismantled by hand, a mattress yields steel and polyurethane foam plus fabric and timber. Shredded mechanically, it mainly yields steel, with the foam and fabric left as residual "floc".
