Placing a "free" sign on furniture and leaving it on the kerb works in practice, particularly for items in good condition. It is most reliable in high-density, walkable suburbs where passers-by are likely to take it.
Be aware: leaving items on the kerb without a council booking can technically constitute illegal dumping if left beyond a reasonable period, and councils may issue a fine. The safer version is to list the item on Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree, or Freecycle as "free pickup" and coordinate a time with the person collecting. This avoids any ambiguity about unauthorised dumping and often results in faster removal.
Recycle unwanted furniture
Recycling furniture is not new to us all. The best and possible answer to all your unwanted items is to use recycling services to have them recycled into other materials or products. This will save manufacturers cost and energy in procuring fresh materials and at the same time, preserving our natural resources. Donating furniture in Sydney
Two main national charity networks accept furniture donations in Sydney, subject to condition:
Salvation Army (Salvos): Accepts furniture in good, sellable condition. Not all Salvos stores can accommodate large items, so call ahead. For furniture you cannot deliver yourself, contact them to arrange a collection: call 13 SALVOS (13 72 58) or visit salvosstores.com.au.
St Vincent de Paul (Vinnies): Accepts furniture donations, but not all shops can take large pieces. Call your local Vinnies shop on 13 18 12 to confirm before dropping off or requesting collection. Home collection is available in some areas.
For both charities, the rule is the same: furniture must be in good condition, not broken, ripped, or stained. If it is damaged, they will not accept it and disposal costs fall back to you.
Online rehoming: Listing furniture as "free pickup" on Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree, or Freecycle is often the fastest way to move items that are still usable. A couch or dining set in reasonable condition will usually attract interest quickly.
Do local councils offer free rubbish removal services?
Yes, many Sydney councils offer free bulky waste collection, but the frequency and rules vary significantly by LGA. Two examples:

Inner West Council: Residents book bulky household item and furniture collections on demand. Items accepted include broken furniture, bed frames, and damaged rugs. Council's own page notes that bulky household items and furniture collected this way go straight to landfill, so Inner West recommends considering reuse or donation first.
What councils generally will NOT collect, regardless of LGA: building materials, carpet, cement or stone items, hazardous chemicals, and items too heavy for two people to lift. Check your specific council's website before booking.
Important: Do not leave furniture on the kerb without a booking. The City of Sydney classifies putting items out on the street without a booking as illegal dumping.
How to book a City of Sydney bulky waste pick-up:
- Go to the City of Sydney's online booking form (linked from cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/waste-recycling-services).
- Select the category for your items: furniture/bulky household items, mattresses, and metals/electronics are booked separately (different trucks collect each type).
- Choose a date. Bookings made by 2pm the day before your area's collection day are picked up that week.
- Write your booking reference number on a piece of paper and attach it to your items before placing them on the kerb.
- Place items neatly on the kerb the evening before collection. Large rugs must be cut to 1m lengths and rolled.
