Blacktown City Council offers up to 12 household clean-up collections a year for properties that pay a Council waste service charge, with no extra booking fee. You book online, wait up to 4 weeks for a date, then put out one box trailer load (2m x 1m x 1m) on your nature strip the night before collection. The clean-up is included for properties that pay for a Council waste service, with no extra charge per use, up to the 12-booking limit. Strata and real estate managers cannot make a booking; the property owner or tenant must be living at the address at the time of collection. Place items at the kerb no earlier than the night before, keep the pile neat and accessible, and do not block footpaths or driveways. Placing items out when these conditions are not met is an offence, fines apply and the goods may not be collected.

Household items accepted by Blacktown City Council

Blacktown City Council collects the following at kerbside. Each item has conditions; collection is refused if they are not met.

• Household furniture: leave items whole, do not break them into smaller pieces
• White goods and appliances (fridges, ovens, washing machines, dryers): remove doors or tape them shut before putting them out. Whitegoods are collected separately; allow up to 5 business days from your collection date
• Mattresses: place them beside other items, not on top of or underneath. Mattresses are collected by a contractor separately, within 24 to 48 hours of your main clean-up service
• Carpet: tie into bundles no longer than 1.5 metres so one person can carry each bundle. Cover with plastic if rain is forecast
• Garden waste (tree clippings, lawn clippings, garden trimmings): box, bag or bundle loose clippings. Branches must be tied in bundles no longer than 1.5m and no thicker than your wrist. Wrap thorny branches (bougainvillea, roses) so they are not a hazard to collection staff

One detail worth knowing about the Blacktown Council mattress service: the mattresses collected are either refurbished or recycled, not landfilled. Those in good enough condition are cleaned, sanitised, bagged and sold or donated through the op-shop network. The rest are broken down: steel springs go to scrap metal, foam is reused in the carpet industry, and timber becomes kindling or mulch.
