Troubling Effects of Deforestation

Paul's Rubbish

As the population continues to increase, our world relies more on natural resources for our basic needs such as food, water, and shelter. However, we are overexploiting our forests to the point that they cannot recover. Deforestation has troubling effects on a scale you cannot even imagine.

What is Deforestation?

Deforestation is the permanent removal of trees for agriculture-use, mining activities, and wood products generation. Forests cover 31% of the total land area of the world. But, over the years drastic drops have been recorded due to deforestation.

Between 2015 to 2020, scientists estimated the deforestation rate at 10 million hectares each year, and agricultural expansion has been its key driver. The population keeps on increasing, and livestock products have become one of the in-demand foods in the market. So, forest lands are often converted to pastures for grazing.

Even though the rate of deforestation is lower compared to the 1990s, scientists have warned that the number is still alarming. And if we notice, the global temperature keeps increasing every year as clearing of trees has become an issue. Here are the troubling effects of deforestation

Effects of Deforestation

Overlogging of trees and irresponsible clearing of forest lands are the reasons to blame for deforestation. Trees are an essential part of the ecosystem, and without them or too few of them can cause troubling effects on the environment.

Global Warming

Trees are responsible for absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen in the atmosphere. But, insufficiency of trees — due to deforestation — cannot meet the increasing emission of carbon dioxide.

Moreover, when we permanently kill trees, they release their stored carbon dioxide. It adds to the human-generated greenhouse gases such as the burning of fossil fuels and car gas emission. Greenhouse gases trap the heat in the atmosphere and make the global temperature increase every year.

Water Troubles and Drought

Forests are a vital factor in the water cycle. But, deforestation prevents cloud formation for the rain to fall. It means that nearby communities near deforested areas are more likely to suffer from drought.

On the other hand, deforestation triggers soil erosion as it makes the land vulnerable to wash out. It can clog waterways that could also drive out fishes and other marine species. Moreover, researchers also say that deforestation diminishes drinking water quality in the nearby communities of deforested lands.

Loss of Natural Habitat

Deforestation is responsible for the loss of habitat of animals and other species. They depend on forest resources for their food, shelter, and way of life. But, when humans clear their area, they are left with no choice but to survive with fewer resources.

In New South Wales alone, tree-clearing in forests kills about 5 million animals each year. And it is expected to double as authorities revoke the Native Vegetation Act. It makes land-clearing easier, which poses a risk to wildlife.

We should never put forest animals’ lives in danger. It is the best time to demand stricter regulations in tree logging, mining activities, and wood manufacturing. Lax laws would only harm us in the future.

Along with urbanisation and increasing population, food and shelter demand are also elevating. We always depend on our forest resources to the point that deforestation has become rampant. If we don’t act now, we could aggravate its troubling effects not only for humankind but also the wildlife.

Deforestation causes global warming, marine and wildlife destruction, drought, and substandard water quality. We should demand stricter laws from the authorities, and do our part in preserving our natural resources. Reuse, reduce, and recycle our way towards a healthy environment.
